Peak Tram Upgrade

1000 sqm | Hongkong

SCENIC were appointed by The Peak Tramways Company (Peninsula Hotel Group) to prepare the landscape design for the upgrade of the Peak Tram. The project involved the reconfiguration of the Lower Terminus and the surrounding public realm; development of landscape treatments for key interfaces along the journey to the Peak; and the refurbishment of the gardens of Helena May. Working with the artist and sculptor Lindy Lee and architects AGC a design concept was created for the main entrance at the Lower Terminus adjacent to St. John’s Building. The design narrative was drawn from thoughts of Hong Kong’s unique cityscape with its dense population and its architectural splendour cradled by magnificent, lush, verdant subtropical mountain forests, which extend out through its archipelago of islands. The artist observed that the psyche of Hong Kong is one of ascension with Victoria Peak forming its  ultimate summit, offering one of the world’s most sublime vistas of city, sea and sky. Perhaps a metaphor for Hong Kong’s outlook towards the world. The sculpture ‘The Eye of Infinity’ is inspired by this ‘spirit of ascension. There is no city on the planet that embodies the intimate connection between heaven and earth, sea and sky as Hong Kong does’. SCENIC’s design realised this vision in abstract the rocky outcrops of the Peak and surrounding mountains, the distinctive vegetation and a reflective pool. This involved the preparation of detailed construction drawings and working closely with the contractor’s craftsmen to achieve the design intention particularly the distinctive stone works.
